Interventional Cardiology is the field of cardiology that deals with blockages in the veins/ arteries. Interventional Cardiologists are responsible for the wide use of catheters and stents for treatment of cardiac blockages. Unlike cardiac surgery, Interventional Cardiologists perform minimally invasive procedures rather than open-heart surgeries. These procedures include Angioplasties, Valvuloplasty, Coronary Stenting etc to treat blocked arteries or to widen any narrow heart valves. These procedures usually do not require long stays in the hospital and the patient can resume his daily chores soon after discharge from the hospital.
Common procedures performed by Interventional Cardiologists in India:
Angioplasty is done to cure the diseased coronary artery. When the fat blocs and narrows the artery, angioplasty is performed to regulate and restore the old blood flow. It is also done to minimize chest pains and lessen the effect on heart muscles in the event of a heart attack. During angioplasty, a thin tube is inserted into the artery which has a balloon at one end. The doctors inflate the balloon so that the deposit is pushed towards the wall and the artery is widened restoring the old blood flow.
Radio Frequency Ablations for Arrhythmias
This is a non-surgical procedure for treating various rapid heartbeat problems. These include atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and atrial tachycardia. These problems cause uncoordinated irregular heartbeats in the hearts middle or upper chambers. This procedure has a success rate of more than 90%. There are very few complications involved and the patient can resume normal working in a few days
The artificial cardiac pacemaker is used to regulate the beating of the heart. It is a small device, which uses electrical signals, which are delivered by electrodes contracting the muscles. The artificial pacemaker is used when the natural pacemaker is not able to maintain the speed or there is a blockage in the electrical conduction system of the heart. An implantable cardioverter- defibrillator is a device that can be implanted for correcting arrhythmias. It is also considered as the first line treatment for ventricular tachycardia or for those at risk for sudden cardiac death

Any patient suffering from Chest pain sees an Interventional Cardiologist or General Cardiologist. On arrival at the hospital in India, the patient would initially require to undergo certain tests to check the current condition of the heart. The doctor may also suggest a CT Angiography to check the extent of the blockage (if any) or the overall health of the arteries, veins and valves. Once the entire investigation procedure is over, the reports are collated and the final diagnosis is derived. Based on the reports the further line of treatment is advised. It might take from 1 to 3 days to complete the entire investigations and get the results.
Post discharge the patients are advised the medications to be taken. On discharge the doctors also advise the next follow-up visit date. The treating consultant may also wish you see some basic investigations on the follow-up day. These investigations could range from basic blood tests like Complete Blood Count, Prothrombin Time etc. Dosage of some medicines also might be adjusted based on these results. The patients are also advised on the kind of nutrition to maintain by food and some basic precautions or life style changes. In most cases the patient is deemed fit to travel after the first follow-up.
