There are a vast number of problems that can occur with bones. Joint replacements usually occur after a certain age due to degeneration of bones/joints. At this point of time the patients resort to joint replacement surgeries which is the final cure for the disease and bring them back to normal in a very short span of time. There are various surgeries as detailed below, that fall under the category of Joint Replacement.

*Total Hip Replacement

The natural human hip is made up of two parts – the hip socket and the upper end of the thighbone. In a hip replacement surgery an artificial joint named prosthesis is placed instead of the natural hip joint. Arthritis is one of the most common reasons for hip replacement in today’s time.

*Total Knee Replacement

Total Knee Replacement is the procedure where a worn out human knee is replaced with a metal prosthesis also known as an implant. The implant is placed in place of the damaged knee to revive the flexibility of the knee and to enable the patient to walk again without pain. Excess body weight along and old age are the main reasons for a patient to undergo Knee Replacement Surgery

*Revision Total Knee / Hip Replacement

Although surgical implants are designed to last for more than 10 years, it is possible that the implant breaks down due to some reason. If the patient is overweight or indulges in high impact sporting activities, then breakdown may occur sooner. Repairs or revisions may be needed in both cases of knee and hip

*Elbow Replacement

When there is severe damage to the elbow, such that the elbow can no longer be used, then the elbow is replaced using prosthetics. It is a procedure where an incision is made at the back of the elbow from where the elbow joint is visible. Then the tissues and the defective arm bones that make up the elbow joint are removed and the artificial joint is placed. It is a procedure that is regularly performed at H&H affiliated hospitals in India.

*Shoulder Replacement

Pain caused by arthritis or degenerative joint disease may be cured by total shoulder replacement. It is a highly successful procedure and is often performed at the end stage. Shoulder arthritis is caused when cartilage that lets ball and socket slide over each other smoothly disappears. In surgery, the bone on bone situation is countered by placing metal ball on plastic socket. Shoulder replacement has very good surgical outcomes and is a highly successful procedure.

Pre – Surgery

The most informed patient is considered as the best patient here. As the primary reason for surgery is pain, extreme care and precaution may be required. Even a little negligence may result in causing the pain to worsen. The doctor schedules a full plan including diet, visits to the hospitals and the list of tests that are needed to be performed. As a first step to planning the surgery, the patient undergoes basis blood tests and X-rays of the damaged joint(s).Based on the blood and radiological finding the surgery is planned. In case of both the hip or knee joints need replacement , the surgery is planned in 2 stages. In the first stage one joint is replaced and after approx. 3-4 days the other joint is operated upon. The patient must adhere to the instructions of the doctor strictly as complications can occur at any time if something is overlooked.

Post – Surgery

For various types of surgeries, recovery time for each one of them is different. There is nothing common for recovery in orthopedic treatments. Everything is different for each patient. It can take a few weeks before the recovery.General health and age plays a major role in recovery. Once the patient is discharged from the hospital, physiotherapy is advised, which plays an important role in the healing process and should be done religiously to keep up fitness. Post discharge the patient need to visit his doctor on the fourteenth day of the surgery to get his staples / stitches removed. Post the same, the patient is however still advised to continue physiotherapy and exercises at home for a period of about one month.
